No angler can win two prizes.
Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – Best Biggest and Smallest Smallest Fish!!
Once again more than challenging conditions spoilt what could have been a really good match. Only 8 attended, one or two due to other commitments elsewhere but I am sure the weather played a major part I the low turnout. It was fun, the format was good and set the challenge. Can you get both the smallest and the biggest fish in the same competition? The overall winner was decided on your positions in each an...
Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – Best Conger/Best Pollack
This match was supposed to put the cat amongst the pigeons points wise as it was two matches rolled in to one so potentially much at stake. As it turned out the weather played a major part with a challenging Easterly wind scuppering most fishable marks and once anglers had settled on their marks the inclination to move deteriorated.
The format was simple though – the best Pollack for one section, the best Conger for the ...
Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – Worm Only
Well that was eventful!! 10 brave, hardy and determined souls participated plus one more turned up for the last hour – Angus!! Angus did all right though, driving every one of their marks, soaking them and made us all stand at 45 degrees!!
The worm event means just that; worm is the only bait allowed. It’s a weigh-in event made trickier by just the six nominated species with a maximum of 2 of each allowed with minimum size limits: Red ...
Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – 24 Hours Heaviest Bag
Fishing was way tougher than expected with Black Bream, Mullet and Bass dominating the weigh in for the 12 competitors. Easterly winds have taken the brunt of the blame as night time fishing was non-existent and for those putting in the hours for the full match with no sleep reward was scant. Better was much deserved! That’s fishing though, sad faces at the weigh in as those leading the pack were scrabbling for points to mainta...
Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – Heaviest Bag of Squid
First try at this format and what fun! Even the squid turned up to play which was a right bonus! It wasn’t just squid neither, a quick tweak of the rules included cuttlefish so really I guess this match was the Heaviest Bag of Cephalopods!! Top rod was Dicky Smith with a bag of 1 cuttle and 11 squid for a weight of 6lb which just about pipped Cephalopoder extraordinaire James Clarke who somehow managed 18 squid for 5lb 14oz. D...
Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – Heaviest Ballan Wrasse - Breakwater
Great to see so many turn out despite the weather, how unlucky was that!? Despite that though with the exception to poor Jordan everyone managed to weigh in - better luck next time Jordan. The fishing itself wasn't inspiring and everyone had to work for their fish with the focus for most being the biggie and ignoring the smaller stuff. It certainly paid of for James Clarke who had his first league win ever with a...
Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – Heaviest Bass
A turnout of 13 on a perfect day for hunting Bass! Plenty of Bass had been reported from around the island but a lot of small fish, so the challenge was getting one over the minimum size limit of 42cm. Most had a similar plan, throw some lures around till dusk and then sit for the last two hours on bait in darkness to try to improve what they had. Big fish were elusive but 7 anglers managed to bring fish to the scales which made for a...

Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – Heaviest Bag Pollack, Garfish, Mackerel and Bass
Great weather greeted just the 7 participants to this match, the attendance being kept down by lots of other activities going on. Limited to a maximum of 6 per species (Bass 3) and size limits each angler had their own idea as to where to go and when using tidal and species knowledge to their advantage. As it was it was all a bit too quiet - well with a exception. Having battered his way down a clif...
Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – Breakwater Float Only Match
A tricky start to this match as to whether it should be on or off but on it was and with some sort of gusto the 8 that attended applied their various skill sets to overcome the windy conditions. Float only was the rule which meant no lead weights hit the bottom and with various rigs hitting the horizons from some, others chose to concentrate on their first permitted 6 Wrasse. Quickly Mikey and Fieona got in to their stri...
Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – Fish Race!
A difficult match given the circumstances of the lack of any real quality to our angling at the moment until the ’elements’ sort themselves out hence why this match has been held back to fish at a suitable time. It was then compounded by Aurigny being unable to fly in any live ragworm and there we have it – a can of worms opened as to what’s what. Actually those worms could have proved useful – I digress!
Only 10 fished but the same ...
Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 – Top 3 Heaviest Fish!
A new match for 2016 with which the format has gone down really well. One twist to the heading though and that is all 3 weighed in fish need to be different species. Given how poor the fishing is currently the size limits issued were negligible to try and provide a full weigh in and all species counted except for mini ones plus Wrasse and Tope. There were still plenty to go for but alas despite excellent weather from the 14 angl...
